The U.S. has confirmed its 11th death from the coronavirus Wednesday, 10 of them in Washington state and one in California.
The California death came in Placer County, making it the first U.S. fatality outside of Washington, according to The New York Times.
Both areas are among the hardest hit by the virus spread, with Washington reporting several more confirmed cases and Los Angeles County reporting six new cases. The county followed Washington's lead in declaring a state of emergency, according to the report.
The 51 coronavirus cases in California are the most in the U.S., but Washington has suffered all but one of the 11 deaths to date.
The California death was an elderly woman who likely contracted the virus on a cruise to Mexico. Most of the deaths are older patients and/or people with underlying health conditions.
To combat the virus, the House and Senate reached a $8.3 billion deal to provide emergency funding.
