President Donald Trump has a better chance of defeating former Vice President Joe Biden this fall in a general election contest than he would Sen. Bernie Sanders, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy insisted Wednesday.
"I think the president is going to win either way, but with Joe Biden, there is no enthusiasm for him," the California Republican told Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria," adding that if Biden wins, he'd have "real problems" in the House.
"We only need 18 seats, and we've got 30 Democrats who sit in seats (from states) that President Trump carried," said McCarthy. "That's even going to grow further."
He also rejected the idea that Biden represents the more moderate side of the Democrats' ticket.
"Even in the House that the Democrats control, the socialist wing controls it," said McCarthy. "Remember, more than half of all the members of Congress in the democratic side not only support 'Medicare for all,' (but) Joe Biden raised his hand when they said do you want to give health care free to illegals he raised his hand like everybody else."
The real challenge is whether Republicans can compete, even though "we beat them on ideas," said McCarthy, because "financially, we need to get there."
He urged watchers to visit the website takethehouse.com if they want to donate and see the house flip from Democrat to Republican.
"Otherwise, it will be continued investigations of President Trump going into the next term," he insisted.
