Amid the coronavirus outbreak that began in Wuhan, China, the Chinese have outlawed eating wild animals, but it is going to be an old habit that will die hard.
The coronavirus has been believed to have began with the transmission from live animals to humans at a wildlife market in Wuhan, sparking the ban, according to CNN.
The Chinese routinely have fed on bat, snake, and pangolin – a scaly anteater – but the government has moved to curtail the practice with a ban on eating "terrestrial wildlife of important ecological, scientific, and social value," which will be signed into law later this year, according to the report.
It is believed the ban will be difficult to enforce, particularly with China's cultural roots in consuming wild animals.
China banned consumption of civets, mongoose-like animals, in 2003 because of its potential linkage to the SARS outbreak in humans, but the still are found on the market for food to this day, according to CNN.
The ban is an important first step, though, as the country seeks to change its long-held society norms.
