President Donald Trump on Wednesday blasted Vanity Fair over an article published earlier this week claiming he is "melting down" because he cannot "control the narrative" on the coronavirus outbreak.

Trump tweeted Wednesday morning:

"Vanity Fair Magazine, which will soon be out of business, and their third rate Fake reporters, who make up sources which don't exist, wrote yet another phony & boring hit piece, The facts are just the opposite. Our team is doing a great job with CoronaVirus!"

The magazine released a report Monday quoting multiple unnamed sources, one of whom said Trump is "definitely melting down over this." Another source said Trump is "just now waking up to the fact that this is bad, and he doesn't know how to respond."

An unidentified former West Wing official said Trump will "resist" suggestions to cancel rallies "until the very last minute."

The former official added, "He may take suggestions to stop shaking hands, but in terms of shutting stuff down, his position is: 'No, I'm not going to do it.'"

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham called the article "100% fake news," after its publication Monday, adding, the author, Gabriel Sherman, "did not reach out to me. False & sensational writing on this topic is irresponsible. POTUS has spent plenty of time w the press pool – simply ask ur colleagues. Nothing about your little college essay is funny or true & I want a retraction."
