Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Wednesday that former Vice President Joe Biden cannot beat President Donald Trump with a "back to normal" campaign, Newsweek reports.
Blair said he would support Biden, who he called a "very capable and experienced guy," if he lived in the U.S., and told Newsweek "a moderate version of a traditional left agenda will do better than a very left version of it" in the 2020 presidential election.
He added, Biden is "right" to tout his relationship with former President Barack Obama, which is a frequently talking point in the former vice president's campaign advertising.
Biden is "right to say the type of spirit with which Obama approached things is a good spirit," Blair said, but advised the Democrat against a "back to normal" message, recommending he instead echo Obama in calling for "change."
He said, "The biggest challenge will be to show that you have the capacity to generate momentum for the change that people want," which is something he said Biden can do "very easily."
"You mustn't provide people with a choice between a radical politics that's wrongheaded and an alternative politics which is 'steady as she goes,'" Blair added. "That's not what it's about today.
"You've got to recast politics completely," he continued.
"It's about recognizing we're living in a world of change, recognizing there are deep-seated problems that need to be tackled but tackling them in a way that is modern and future-oriented, and that people think is practical and sensible," he concluded. "If you provide that, they'll back it."
