The United States death total from coronavirus has topped 200, according to the latest from Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 map in its coronavirus resource center.
The death toll in Washington state has increased to 74, and the number of cases has topped 1,376, according to state health officials.
King County reported four new deaths — bringing its total to 60 — while Snohomish, Benton, and Island counties each reported one death.
Gov. Jay Inslee issued an order Thursday prohibiting non-urgent medical and dental procedures in an effort to secure protective equipment used by front-line health care workers. The order applies to any procedure that would require someone to wear protective gear.
"We know the healthcare personal protective equipment supply chain in Washington has been severely disrupted by the significant increased use of such equipment worldwide," Inslee said in a statement. "We will do all we can to protect the women and men who protect us."
The deadliest coronavirus states to date, per Johns Hopkins:
- Washington 74 deaths and 1,376 cases.
- New York 34 deaths and 5,365 cases.
- California 18 deaths and 952 cases.
Worldometer, which tallies its totals from media reports in addition to Johns Hopkins has the U.S. death count up to 218. It also reports 14,299 confirmed cases in the U.S.
Those totals render a confirmed-case death rate of 1.5% in the U.S.
Worldwide the numbers are far more daunting to date: 245,612 confirmed cases and 10,048 deaths. That is a confirmed-case death rate of 4%.
President Donald Trump was roundly criticized for expressing hope the death rate would be lower than the health experts' estimate of 3.4%.
