As time passes, history frequently takes unexpected turns that reshape global dynamics. The recent change of the G7 into the G20 can be compared to a "Zeitenwende," a watershed point in history, especially for Germans. This extension, while met with mixed reactions from the G7 countries, is a significant step towards a more diverse and inclusive global forum. As the G20 conference in Delhi approaches, it is more than just a gathering of nations; it is a celebration of India's rise, both economically and democratically.

India, which arose from the infertile soil of a hierarchical society, is today the world's largest democracy. The G20 conference in Delhi not only honours this achievement but also highlights India's growing economic might. The country's journey through formalisation, industrialization, financialization, urbanisation, and human capital investment has placed it on the verge of becoming the world's third-largest economy. Notably, India's approach contrasts with that of China, where residents faced a choice between affluence and freedom. In pursuing Gandhiji's vision, India combines popular democracy with mass prosperity.

In order to reflect on the past, the Bandung Conference in 1955 brought together leaders from more than half of the world's population. Today's G20 is even more important, as it includes nations that generate an astounding 85 percent of global GDP. This economic prowess translates into geopolitical influence, military might, and soft power, emphasising India's global importance. Despite India's early decision to provide universal suffrage, it took years for its economic might to emerge, finally surpassing that of its colonial forefather, the United Kingdom.

Investigating India's post-independence economic history reveals a complicated network of policy choices that skewed the roles of society, markets, and governance. The pursuit of many flagship programmes and objectives appears to have been impeded by an unidentified and elusive adversary—one that was neither identified nor confronted.

The G20 Summit in Bali acknowledged an unprecedented multifaceted crisis, pushing public and private investment while bolstering international trade. These activities, which echo the suggestions of the B20 corporate engagement group, demonstrate the need of concerted efforts in times of crisis. With geopolitical developments and global concerns intensifying, India's G20 presidency becomes critical for fostering stability, macroeconomic coordination, post-pandemic recovery, conflict resolution, and climate action.

The subject "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," or "One Earth, One Family, One Future," effectively captures today's global challenges. Prime Minister Modi's commitment to a G20 presidency that is inclusive, ambitious, decisive, and action-oriented aligns with this subject and speaks to the needs of the globe.

The formation of 13 working groups by India demonstrates its commitment to critical issues like employment, the digital economy, and trade and investment. Discussions on macroeconomic development, economic risks, and international financial architecture in the finance track highlight India's aggressive posture.

India's contributions to sustainability are clear, as the country ranks in the top five in the Climate Change Performance Index. Concurrently, the nation's digital revolution, which is powering industries such as retail, finance, and education, represents a quick and dynamic transition.

India's priorities reflect the essence of global concerns. As India's leadership resonates within the G20, its efforts are bolstered by feedback from businesses throughout the world, enabled via the B20 group. These deliberations, led by the Confederation of Indian Industry as the B20 secretariat, will set the global agenda for the coming year.

To summarise, the G20 conference in Delhi represents India's ascent as a powerful global force, ushering in a new era in global affairs. India's inclusive leadership and commitment to addressing today's critical concerns are positioned to move history towards a more prosperous and harmonious world.
