House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., says there is an element of misogyny that undermines women like Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., in their bid for president.
"Every time I get introduced as the most powerful woman, I almost cry, because I wish that were not true," Pelosi told reporters hours after Warren dropped out of the race earlier Thursday.
"I so wish that we had a woman president of the United States, and we came so close to doing that," said Pelosi, the highest-ranking woman in government. "I do think there's a certain element of misogyny. And some of it isn't really mean-spirited, it just isn't their experience."
Pelosi also claimed some people have "their own insecurities" that prevent them from voting for a woman.
Warren withdrew after failing to win a single state on Super Tuesday, the biggest day on the Democratic primary calendar.
Pelosi said the women who ran will serve as trailblazers for women looking to run in future presidential races, and added she thought the American people are ready for a female president.
