President Donald Trump tweeted an insult at former Attorney General Jeff Sessions Wednesday morning after he settled for qualifying for a runoff election in his bid to return to the Senate.

The day after Sessions fell short of winning the Republican nomination in the Alabama primary, which forced a runoff election with former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville, Trump brought up Sessions' actions in the early days of the Russia investigation that has dogged his presidency since it began.

"This is what happens to someone who loyally gets appointed Attorney General of the United States & then doesn't have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt. Recuses himself on FIRST DAY in office, and the Mueller Scam begins!" Trump wrote.

Sessions served as Trump's attorney general from February 2017 until he was dismissed in November 2018. Trump was — and still is — unhappy with Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe because of the role he played on Trump's campaign.

Sessions, 73, served in the Senate from 1997 until he joined the Trump administration, and now he is trying to take back his old seat that's currently held by Democrat Doug Jones.
