Public health department officials in Washington, D.C., are recommending all “non-essential” gatherings of more than 1,000 people be postponed or canceled in an effort to battle the coronavirus outbreak.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted Wednesday: “DC Health recommends that non-essential mass gatherings, including conferences and conventions, be postponed or canceled. Mass gatherings are defined as events where 1,000 or more people congregate in a specific location.”
And she added: “We also recommend that any social, cultural, or entertainment events where large crowds are anticipated be reconsidered by the organizer. This recommendation is in effect through March 31.”
The Hill noted the move is designed to try to slow the spread of the virus. And it said experts have recommended the cancellation of large gatherings as an important step.
The World Health Organization declared Wednesday that the global coronavirus outbreak is now a pandemic.
