Data compiled in South Korea shows those between the ages of 20-29 are super spreaders of the coronavirus, Uproxx is reporting.
In South Korea, the age range is actually the one most likely to get the virus, Uproxx said. Just over 28% of the cases have been in the age range. The website cited a report on the data from the German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.
And it noted the age group is most likely to spread the virus to the more at-risk groups. The report said those between the ages of 20-29 are more likely to break curfews and socialize more than other groups.
The New York Times reported Wednesday that of the 508 patients known to have been hospitalized in the U.S. with coronavirus, 38% were between 20 and 54.
A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that 20% of those hospitalized and 12% of those in intensive care were between the ages of 20 and 44.
Stephen Morse, a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health told the Times: “It’s not just going to be the elderly. There will be people age 20 and up. They do have to be careful, even if they think that they’re young and healthy.”
Anthony Fauci, the National Institutes of Health’s infectious diseases chief, has made a direct appeal to millennials, The Hill noted.
“The problem is, we need the young people to help us to protect the vulnerable because when an individual who is young gets infected and either has no symptoms at all or even mild symptoms, that individual would continue the virus spreading in the community,” Fauci said.
