Former President Barack Obama is urging the American public to “stay calm” during the coronavirus outbreak, advising “common sense precautions” to stay uninfected.

“Protect yourself and your community from coronavirus with common sense precautions: wash your hands, stay home when sick and listen to the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and local health authorities,” the former president tweeted on Wednesday.

“Save the masks for healthcare workers. Let’s stay calm, listen to the experts, and follow the science,” Obama added.

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams sent a similar message on Saturday, tweeting, “seriously people- STOP BUYING MASKS! They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”

The CDC has identified over 130 cases of the coronavirus in 13 states, and has advised local communities to start considering ways they can prevent the virus from spreading.

"As more areas see community spread, local communities may start employing tools that encourage social distancing," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said on Tuesday, according to CNN. "The goal of social distancing is to limit exposure by reducing face-to-face contact and preventing spread among people in community settings."
