House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs Thursday introduced a resolution calling for a formal condemnation of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer over his use of "threatening" language toward two Supreme Court justices over decisions on a Louisiana abortion law.
“Schumer is the leader of his conference, and, while he may offer public criticism about decisions with which he disagrees, he should not use rhetoric that is threatening and intimidating towards members of our independent judiciary,” the Arizona Republican said in a statement to The Hill.
Republicans were outraged by Schumer's remarks during a rally that the justices, President Donald Trump appointees Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, would "pay the price" for their decisions.
"Even after he was called out by many of his own colleagues and the Chief Justice, Leader Schumer would not apologize for his threats," said Biggs. "This threatening rhetoric has no place in the U.S. Congress — especially from a leader of one of our parties. I hope my colleagues will join me on this resolution."
Schumer's comments are also in "direct conflict with the Constitutional process by which cases are deliberated and verdicts are issued by the U.S. Supreme Court," said Biggs. "(They) do not contribute anything positive to the public dialogue.”
Schumer said Thursday Republicans had misconstrued is remarks as a physical threat, but admitted he should not have used the words he had said.
Bigg's demand for formal action also calls on Schumer to formally apologize to Gorsuch and Kavanaugh and to make a public statement that threats to members of any of the three branches of government are not appropriate, especially from a person in elected office.
