Anand: Six persons were killed after a speeding SUV car rammed into an auto rickshaw and a bike in Gujarat's Anand district. While two persons died on the spot, four others succumbed to their injuries after being shifted to a hospital in Sojitra.
The deceased included three members of a family, including two sisters and their mother.
The accident took place on a state highway connecting Anand town with Tarapur near Sojitra village.
Eye witnesses say Gujarat Congress' Sojitra MLA Punambhai Madhabhai Parmar's son-in-law Ketan Padhiyar was driving the car. The driver of the car was in an inebriated condition.
The Congress MLA Punambhai was not in the city at the time of the accident. His son was rushed to rescue Ketan from the ire of local residents.
Eye witnesses say the driver of the SUV was driving too fast in an inebriated state and rammed into a bike first and then an auto rickshaw. Both bike riders and the auto driver died on the spot while three others were immediately rushed to the hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.
"My son-in-law was not drunk. It is a political conspiracy to defame me before the Gujarat state assembly elections," said Congress MLA Punambhai Parmar.
According to Anand police, a car with registration number GJ-23-CD-4404 rammed into an auto rickshaw and a bike near Dali village under Sojitra taluka.
"Accused has been arrested. IPC Section 304 has been invoked. Details of the six deceased have been found. Accused Ketan Padhiyar is the son-in-law of a Congress MLA," says Anand Police.
