Whether or not President Donald Trump is concerned about his polling numbers more than a year from the election, Republicans down the ticket are, according to The Hill.
"His numbers are problematic," a Republican pollster who requested anonymity told The Hill. "Folks are nervous, but no one is surprised."
The report claims six GOP pollsters working on 2020 campaigns see the president as trailing as he officially relaunched his re-election bid Monday night in Orlando, Florida.
"There are plenty of examples in recent political history where candidates have come from far behind to win," the pollster added to The Hill. "Those candidates have been willing to make adjustments. Not sure this candidate is at all willing."
What is worse: polarized opinions on President Trump have been cemented and are equally unlikely to change as November 2020 approaches.
"Trump's numbers are really sticky," Firehouse Strategies pollster Alex Conant told The Hill. "It's just going to be really hard for him to move his numbers up, and similarly it's going to be hard for the Democrats to move his numbers down."
President Trump generally needs to get his approval rating up to 51%, as former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush had in their re-election campaigns of 2012 and 2004, according to 2016 Trump campaign pollster John McLaughlin.
Most polls have had President Trump's approval in the mid-40s, save for the GOP-leaning Rasmussen Reports.
"If we learned anything from the 2016 election, it should be that polls this far out from election day are meaningless," Republican National Committee press secretary Blair Ellis told The Hill. "The RNC's world-class data program that helped Trump win in 2016 shows us that reported polling is wrong, once again, and Americans across the country are just as enthusiastic about him and his record-setting list of accomplishments as they were when they first sent him to the White House."
